Hedgehog Survey

Our hedgehog, Erinaceus europeaus, is listed on the UK Biodiversity Action Plan as a Priority Species and has suffered a significant decline in recent years. One study showed 20% decline over 4 years in the number of individuals seen.

The Wildlife Information Centre holds very limited data on the distribution of hedgehogs across the Lothians and Scottish Borders. By launching a survey of hedgehogs and inviting everyone to send in details of all their hedgehog sightings TWIC hopes to develop a clear picture of the status of the hedgehog in our region. We will be able to develop a baseline to monitor what is happening to hedgehogs in the future.

If you see a hedgehog please let us know. Click on the following link to go to a page where you will be able to give us details of the hedgehog you saw:submit a hedgehog record online.
